Celebrating Buddha Day 2025 – A Day of Peace and Reflection

On 17th May 2025, members of the Indian Buddhist and Ambedkarite community in Melbourne will gather at the Mount Waverly Community Centre to celebrate Buddha Day. This day commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and parinibbana of the Buddha, marking it as one of the most significant events in the Buddhist calendar.

The celebration will include chanting, meditation, and reflections on Buddha’s teachings, reminding participants of the values of peace, compassion, and unity. Children and youth will also participate in cultural performances, highlighting the importance of passing on these traditions to the next generation.

Beyond the ceremonies, Buddha Day serves as a reminder of Navayana Buddhism, introduced by Babasaheb, and its emphasis on equality, rationality, and social transformation. For many Ambedkarites in Australia, this celebration is both a spiritual and social reaffirmation of their identity.

Events like Buddha Day also highlight the growing visibility of Indian Buddhists in Australia, fostering connections with broader multicultural communities. By creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration, AGF ensures that the values of Dhamma, inclusivity, and unity remain alive and relevant in today’s society.
